Court Security

The Middlesex County Sheriff’s Office is responsible for maintaining the overall security of the Middlesex County Courts. Deputies assigned to the courthouse perform several duties, including screening incoming visitors, providing security in the courtrooms, responding to alarms, conducting perimeter patrols, and transporting prisoners between the Middle Peninsula Regional Security Center and the courthouse holding area.


Civil Process fulfills the sheriff’s legal duty to serve process and execute writs. These judicial documents are issued by courts, government agencies, and private attorneys in Virginia and across the United States.


Security Notice

All visitors entering the Middlesex County Courthouse are asked to cooperate with the deputies and are required to pass through a metal detector to be screened for weapons prior to gaining admittance.   

Personal belongs are subject to search such as purses, wallets, briefcases, packages, etc. Size of bags allowed into the courthouse are restricted to 1 foot long and 6 inches tall and size of purses are restricted to 8 inches long and 4 inches tall for safety reasons. 


 Items prohibited inside the Courthouse include, but are not limited to:

  • Guns
  • Knives
  • Pepper spray, mace
  • Tobacco products, e-cigarettes
  • Lighters, matches 
  • Ammunition
  • Tools
  • Video/Audio Recorders, electronic devices of any kind
  • Smartwatches
  • Razors
  • Liquids, Aerosols
  • Bottles of any kind (full or empty)
  • Food, beverages
  • Shorts (appropriate attire is required)
